Transmitters, receivers, servos

I'm somewhat confused: say I buy a 4-channel radio transmitter. Do I also need a receiver and servos made specifically for that transmitter, or can I buy the rx and servos from somewhere else and somehow get them to communicate with the tx?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

they can be any make Rx or Servos. the servos can literally be any make.

The Rx, well you may need to get a specific crystal for the Rx (same for the Tx) but as long as they are on the same channel that will be fine. So a futaba Tx can communicate with a GWS Rx on the same channel. LHS will be able to sell you the right crystals for the Rx or Tx.
