View Full Version : Eco 7 Crash after 7 flights. WARNING !!!!!!
My Eco 7 crashed today after just 7 flights. The tail blade broke off in flight.
It has separated into 2 sections.
I was videoing at the time and will post a link to a youtube video of the crash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqBNYSff_oM
Here are some pictures of the wreckage. I would like to buy another Eco 7 but but not if this is a common problem. Is there an upgrade for the tail rotor.?

Hallo rcpilot23.
Mein Beileid.
Diese Bilder kommen mir bekannt vor.
Meinen Ranger erging es nicht anders.
Der Flug sah ja ganz gut aus!.
Der Heckrotor dürfte voll diese Kräfte nicht gewachsen sein!.
LG Chris.
Hi Chris39,
So is the tail rotor failure a common problem with the Eco7?

Omg what a wreakage!
Maybe you had already a little failure in your tail rotor?
I'll take more care now to check up my tail rotor blades by this movie!
Hope you have soon a new one what a pitty.
Luckly your carbon blades survived the crash!!
My deeply condolance for the heli....
Well maybe but I had not crashed before or never touched the tail rotor on the ground. So maybe faulty from new.
I have just ordered another Eco 7 from Helihobby USA
$367 US shipped to Australia so cheaper than the first.

Yeah you never know what happend.
And the price of a new one much cheaper than your first one how cheap was the first one?
In holland the price is €499,- is 648,70 dollar USD...
So compare for your self lol!!!

I have looked closer to the tail rotor of the eco and i could broke on the welding point in the middle.
Its a weak point witch could brake after time.
If you have your new one check the tail rotor, in the middle where yours broke there is a point what looks very soft almost glued together.
Yep will check that everyflight from now on.
The first Eco 7 cost me $660 US shipped !! so I'm glad I found Helihobby.
I think it has the sky taxi stickers on it which can be easily removed and replaced with the blue stickers.
sorry to see this,
in my early days of flying the 7 I learnt the hard way to check "everything" over even after just transporting to the field,
Its a shame ikarus make this so flimsy surely they could have made a fiberglass
fuss and carbon tail rotor upgrades by now,,
Just don't want to I guess
Or even the tail rotor blade made from one piece molded plastic and not 2 sections joined. I am going to order another Eco 7 but I will check the tail rotor before each flight.

ghe good plan!!
I do now also you never know
I have just ordered a new Eco 7 kit from www.hobby-lobby.com in the USA
$342 US includes Fedex Shipping to Australia which will take about 5 days.
The kit has no electronics which I don't need.

Hmm smart thinking!
Oke so hobby-lobby sents from the USA to AUS so they will sent also to holland!
I can't find a american seller who shipps to holland so maybe i found one today!
Thanks!!:D

uhm and ohw sorry but i can't find the eco7 i see an eco8 but no eco7.
You have to order the Eco 7 from
http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/onlineshop/usa/index.php?sid=ec0a3dff02751cfdd3aa4c9214830551&cl=alist&cnid=274
Then Hobby Lobby actually process the order.
I have ordered 6071001 Eco 7 without electronics which I have from the first heli.
After some more investigation I have discovered one of the tail blades has seam line along it and it has started the split which I suspect caused the blade to crack in half. The blade split would have caused alot of vibration.
So check yours and see if it has the seam too. Maybe mine was a faulty one from the start.
Here is a picture of the blade showing the seam and it starting to split open.
The other blade has no seam and is ok.
Maybe mine was just faulty from the start.
Please check yours and let me know if it has the seam on the tail blade.

I have the same thing maybe its a good point for ikarus to check the little weak points on the tail rotors!

some more pictures there is one point where you see the tail rotor axel its rusty have you the same problem?
In the first i had a rusty main axel but i have replaced it.

I can't tell if mine if rusty because it's inside the fuselage.

hmm...
Somebody else who can help me out?
If the main shaft and tail are rusting then your helicopter is being exposed to moisture. Do you keep you Eco 7 inside or on the garage?
heli-jean24
14.06.08, 18:21
i keep it in my bedroom.
So there is not any change too, maybe its holland here is it always rainy and moisture air condition.
But germany has that also, so i think germany must have the same problem.
yep probably climatic conditions.
Have a look at these pics of my tail blade. You can see were the plastic has split which is white in colour and were the plastic is grey. This indicates a join and not a molded one piece design. This is where the failure occurred.
Looks like the tail blades are 2 halves joined together. The break is very clean and the plastic is not white but the grey colour like the rest of the blade.
What a crap design. So when I get my new Eco 7 I will have some how reinforce the tail blade or even try to modify it to use proper blade grips and tail blades.

i was thinkin about something.
When you place the same size airplane prop from wood or carbon?
Is that an solution?
I go with the tail rotor to my hobby shop and ask for an air plane prop from the same size and watch the diffrence.
Maybe you can help me to solve some problems i have with my falcon 3D.(i know realy offtopic)
during flight with the micro heli (electric) the engine and ESC speed controller both brushless gets very hot.
I know it can be to much pitch so i try to reduce it but when i do that the RPM is waaaaaaaaaaay to high!
I have this problem from the start with it and i cant solve it, burned 3 motors and two ESC's count by your self what it costs:( .
Please have the solution for me!
Yes good idea with the airplane prop. Should be able to find something similar.
In fact the prop used on my Parkzone Srtyker is very similar.
I had a Falcon3D heli and the motor and speed controller never got hot.
Maybe the main gear and pinion gear mesh is too tight?
usually speed controllers get hot when they don't run at 100% power.
You might have to search rcgroups forums about it.
Plenty of Falcon3D info there.

keep up posted if you modify your tail rotor!:D
I'll try after my holliday to mod my tail rotor because i am scared now for breaking;)
And thanks for the help about the falcon 3d.
I use the stock motor and stock main gear so that can't be the problem.
Very weird i'll try rcgroups forum maybe they know more about it!
I will be looking at making a carbon fibre tail blade.
Another flyer here said he can make them easy. Just have to use the original tail blade as a mold. I will also check the local hobby shop for a blade.
Looks like the carbon fiber tail blade will be the best solution.
Will let you know when I try it.
Probably be about 2 weeks time
The new Eco 7 should be here in a week maybe less.

i'll see hope its the solution!
Stupid plane the eco7 had it realy smooth no tail pulses watch now i was getting little vibration so i adjusted the stiffnes of the main rotor clambs no difference.
Hmm thinking maybe blades out of track yep no vibrations!
now the tail problem it was nice and smooth now its again realy badly pulses:confused:
When you save your data in your gtc it wil stand there right?
i'll try to change it again maybe it helps but its weird, heli was fine and now shitty again.
I'm using the default settings in my eco7 which worked well.
My advice is to reload the default settings file into the gig,
if you mess around with the settings tomuch they become corrupt,
I'd start a fresh then you know its not the settings,
I have my 7 setup to fly from my futaba F7c TX and can adjust the ATV settings from that, much better, for me anyway,
Cheers:)

Thanks for the info again.
Heli flyes again great.
Only one thing the heli is loosing the power in the beginning the heli was realy fast with going up.
Now the heli is some slower maybe i'm used to the power:confused:
I also find scrapings of the motor in my canopy is this normal or is my engine failing???
The new Eco 7 tail blade and the 2 spare tail blades I bought don't have the seam on the blade like my first tail blade had.
So it looks like a manufacturing problem or a bad batch of tail blades.
My new tail blades look ok with no seams on them.
Thanks for the info again.

How many flights have you done. Brushed motors wear out and the brushes need to be replaced or the motor needs to be replaced.
Also you can try removing the main motor from the heli and running it at full power for a few minutes. This does help clean up dirt inside the motor and can restore power. So run the motor under no load outside the heli for about 5 minutes and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info i'll try it when i resived all my spare parts because i crashed the heli terrible:(
main shaft bend, cross shaft bend, landing gear trached, tail boom bend, servo broken, main blades broken all by failure of tail rotor motor:mad:
Maybe you can help me with choose the right servo i want to use the stock servo but i only dont know wich one it is on the ikarus site.
Can you help me out?
Regards Jean Paul:cool:
I crashed my Jet Ranger last week too. My fault I was using the white Tamiya plug for the battery and it the power cut out in flight. I have changed to Deans plugs now. I bought the front fuselage section from Ikarus and had to glue it together etc. All fixed now but I have to use cable ties to hold the undercarriage together until Ikarus have stock.
Here is a link to Ikarus website for the Eco 7 servos.

I buy it complete with all the components to fly with tx name it it has all with 4400 mAh 5s2p 18.5V lipo and charger and cbf spare main rotor parts and a lot of different stuff for dont be scared ;) 975,- usd 750 euro hahahahahahaha.
I searched all components appart and count it i was coming to a amount of 2730 usd 2100 euro omg i am very glad that mine happend:D
Regards jean paul
Some guys fly the Logo here in Perth, they fly great but cost alot to fix.
The Align Trex 500 and 600 are the most popular heli here.
Enjoy the Logo 10
heli-jean24
15.07.08, 15:51
thanx:D
I know the Trex is realy the state of art but i think it is realy more expencive with the use of 6s lipo's or even more ;)
Well the Logo 10 is Trex 500 size and similar in size to the Eco 7.
The Logo 10 parts should be cheaper in your country.
What brand of pitch gauge are you using?
heli-jean24
15.07.08, 18:52
The brand is H.T. Racing ( Hobby Taiwan Racing) Here's a picture.
