View Full Version : ECO Photo contest.
Hey, Guys and gals,
I entered my ECO 8 in a photo contest and I need votes (actually the ECO 8 needs votes)
I think it would be great fun to have an electric heli kick the glow guys butts. This is easy and it only takes 30 seconds.
Go to: www.multiplexrc.com/contest_air.htm (http://www.multiplexrc.com/contest_air.htm)
Scroll down to view aircraft photos and click. Put your name and e-mail in and scroll down till you see my ECO 8 Jet Ranger. Click on the gray box with rdr6 in it and your done. Thank you and tell all your friends to vote. Wish I could share the prize. If you ever need my help let me know.
Thanks again
Dave
Hey, has anyone voted for the ECO 8 yet? Let me give you the site again. I will leave out the very first(w) for the simple reason that when I put the whole address in it gets underlined automaticly, And you wont see the little line that belongs after the word contest. So here it is again. Just add one more W. I also was told by one of my voters that they are giving something away to a voter. Thats all I know on that.
ww.multiplexrc.com/contest_air.htm
Also if I will first place, I will have no need for the sim, so if you vote for me be sure to tell me and I will auction it off after the contest CHEAP,Just to my voters though so let me know after you put the vote in.
Thanks
Dave
I voted for you.
I would have voted for the heli anyway, even if you didn't ask. Great detail work.
Thanks Buddy, Remember even though I may win a nice radio and sim, We are voting here to show the slimers we electric guys stick togeather.
Thanks again
Dave
Hi RD
Got My Vote.
I am building my second ECO with brushless and the Jet Ranger body.
I noticed on you photo the skids are not as the one I have got with my kit. The manual is in German and I am not sure which is correct. It appers that I am to cut off the lugs which allow the undercarrage to be screwed to the bottom of the chassis and either glue it to the bottom or screw in the thin plactic. This does not appear to be strong enough. Any Tips??
Regards
Andy

Andy,
Its not strong enough. What I did was I went to the local hobby shop and got some 5/16 Brass tubing and some 1 inch X 1/16 thick bras bar and a small tubing bender. I Bent the tubing for the down supports and then cut ywo more pieces for the skids. I tappered the ends with my Dremel. I then soldered everything togeather. The flat bar was cut to match the bottom of the fuse and also soldered to the down supports. Then on the inside of the heli I opened up the top of the battery tray with my Dremel just enough to fit 2 more flat brass pieces inside. One in the front and one in the back. After drilling through both the inside piece and the outside piece I counter sunk the holes on the inside pieces so I could use flat head screws to prevent the battery pack from getting screwed up. Now On the inside just cut 2 small squares and drop one brass piece in the front and one in the back. Beaware though it takes a little pratice bending the brass. Plus it adds a once or two but if your running brushless you will be okay. If you need pics let me know. And thanks for the Vote, your on my list.

Looks good Dave
You got my vote.
Nice work man !
Voted for you!
bigeyes
Thanks for the votes everyone. Tell your friends. At first I had planned to just stay in second till the end and then blast them on the last day, But a couple of the pics were getting votes to fast. So I decided that maybe it would be just better to get out in front and pull as far as possible into the lead. So that is my goal now to just smoke them now and leave them in the dust. So again you guys are on my list for the pennny auction of the SIM if I win.
Thanks and again tell everyone you know.
Dave

you got my vote. gr8 looking heli!!!
Thanks RD
I was about to do something similar with carbon sheet alum tube and epoxy. But I thought surely Ikarus would not have left be to figure out this complexity for myself.
A you have confirmed that there is no simple way I can proceed with the modifications. I would appreciate any pictures which would help. I will keep you informed of progress and would like to attempt Video once my flying improves.

Andy

I love it when I manage to solicit a response!
The whole phrase is:
" When in Rome, do as the Romans" Kind of the wise move when you have a bunch of underpayed soldiers wielding swords and a lot of free time.
So, yes I voted, not only to blend in with the rest of the "centurions" on this site, but because you have a beautiful bird. Dig the camera pod. However, I really like the scale paint job. Did you airbrush this? If so, where can I learn? What sort of paint masking tape / material is best to lay down patterns? I want to do a flame job!
My suggestion is to take the prize and will it to a younger "to be" pilot whom you can take under your wing (rotor). We need numbers in this hobby. I am ever frustrated by the low (<<1) ratio of legal flight fields to soccor fields. You and I know which sport it is that people stay in longer!
Awesome effort and result! RD

Ah, I knew there was more to it than just Rome. Neat story. I like it.
The heli actually has graphics applied. Why, well, I did airbrush one and it won many contests. But after I painted half my basement trying to get it right (and I did ) I swore I would never do it again. So I sold the air brush and on this heli I went for the graphic approch. I went to where the real channel 10 heli is, shot a bunch of pics then took the fuse and the PICs to a sign maker. He pondered over it for 4 days till he got it right. Bingo I had graphics that just rub on in a few mins. I did the whole heli in less than an hour. The one I air brushed took me longer than it did for me to learn how to fly. The one I air brushed is of Channel 3 out of Phila. Real sweet with a lot of blending. If you want I can send you a PIC of that one too.
Thank you for the vote. Tell your friends cause I is slowly going down.
Dave
Hi giheli
Sorry to use this post for unrelated item.
On the subject of new pilots. I agree that this sport, heli and fixed wing, is underrated, poorly supported, lacks good sites with any facilities, and we see very little of the next generation taking up of the sport.
I am in London , UK and I feel it is worse here, than in USA. It is a "poor" sport and unlike the local 60 acre golf course, (I have done my protest my flying over this land and been booted off! )with great resturant and bars, my local flying fields only luxury is a tree for wee.
I cannot see any one investing as there will be poor returns as so few in sport.
I put the problem to the competition. It is a lot harder to build and fly r/c than use a Playstation. Kids would rather buy games, overpriced CD, mobile phones, brand names, etc. These were not around 10-20 years ago.
I am pissed off and hope it changes.
Andy
I think you hit the nail square on with the playstation conclusion. I too am frustrated. King County Seattle, WA actaully has an ordinance in which you can't fly any RC machine powered or not outside a designated field. (There is only one powered field 40 minutes drive away). There are hundreds of soccer fields.
I don't think I have ever seen RC products advertised in the mass media. TV Radio or Civic newspaper.
How many times have you heard of a kid complaining about nothing to do? We can only try to convert and do our best.
Cheers

giheli,
I was born in Seattle and my Mother, sister, and brother and their familes live in the area. I will likely never live there again for the reasons you stated. Washington has been Californicated with liberalism and the ordinance you cite is an outcome. I like the right to defend myself and family with a firearm but Wasington does not allow it. The taxes there are through the roof because of all the welfare, cultural, arts, pro sports the public is forced to support. It is a beautiful area of the country but it is a liberal cesspool hence the evil eye toward RC flying. Just remember as you drive 40 miles to the field - RC Aviation is not a crime.
Whhooooooooo yah!
As of 3 months I am relocating to North Dakota. I think things will be a little better out there! A whole lot of flat undeveloped space.

Hey, Guys. I dont mind you using my post to talk, actually I enjoy reading whats up in other places than Hatboro Pa. But drag a voter in here with you once in a while. As it stands right now. I am at 104 in 3rd place. First place has 136 and second 132. We need voters guys. HELP,Help,PLEASE
Hi guys,
For RDR6 –
I have voted for you twice today from all (to me) available e-mail accounts under disguise. (I am the boss in my company so when I say to my employees - vote for RDR6 they follow the order blindly ... just kiding) But I could give away only 2 votes ...
For Andys, giheli and Robert –
O.K. maybe you do not know exactly where my country is - Slovenia - Europe, but here is how these things are down here.
I have only 10 minutes to a place where I can enjoy my ECO 8 or one of mine propelled fixed wing aircraft but the problem is the price of these flying machines. I do not know what is the average monthly paycheque in USA or U.K. per capita but here in Slovenia it is around 650 USD per month! O.K. for me is a bit different regarding the fact I have my own business, but for someone who really wants to fly RC and has average income it is very expensive to buy the equipment and possibly not starve to death. So here are not so many modellers here (though there are a lot of people having fun with RC anyway) as there could be if we would have achieved life level you have in your countries. So - when our life level increases there will probably be an increasement of people enjoying RC - but on the other hand very quickly the legislation will follow prohibiting propelled flying in a lot of places... And I totally agree with the fact that also here a lot of people rather buy Playstation console and stare at the monitor for the whole afternoon than rather do something creative. Huh...
Yes - one more thing - have you noticed that ECO tail rotor shaft bends without crashing during normal use. I believe that 3mm diameter shaft is rather weak for this purpose. Do you know - does Ikarus supply specially hardened shaft???
Bigeyes
Bigeyes,
Thanks for the votes buddy, and I agree with you and feel bad for you too. Its a shame more people cant enjoy the hobby in your country. The average income in this country is about 2000.00 a month give or take a few hundred dollars. At least that is what it is in my neck of the woods. Other parts of US are differant.
The tail rotor shaft is very soft and will do like you say. You have to check it often. Ikarus does make a hardened one. Just a few bucks. I replaced 4 of the softies before buying the hard one. I havent replaced it since.
Thanks again
Dave
Voted for you, while I am building up my ECO!
Ciao, Michele
Yep, it's done !
