I got an email from a member that had a virus attached. This person has never contacted me before by email. I think someone has hacked the bbs and is sending the emails.
Seems like the same thing is happening over on the Hornet BBS as well since there was a post about the same issue. Anyone else got an unexpected email from another member? |

I get viruses sent to me everyday along with the usual "Is your p*nis too small?" emails etc....
I just delete them, make sure you use a virus checker, dont open attatchments from people you do not really know and get a virus checker and keep it up to date. AVG is free and very good... |

if you set up your email client to have a preview pane you don't even need to open it, which is one of the ways they check the email address actually exists apparently, if it's opened it reports back to the sender so you then get more of them...and the cycle goes on.

The new generation virii are smarter than ever. They look in the adress book of the victim and often use a randomly selected address as the "return address" so you never know where they are really coming from unless you pour through the headers. Chances are someone who had you in their address book was infected but the Email looks like it is coming from someone else. Makes your head hurt!

Get yourself good anti virus software and a firewall.
I used to run Zone Alarm before I installed the router which has a built in firewall, and I run Norton AV 2002. A good spam filter is Spam weasel, which stops mail that doesn't pass the checks you set up - Excellent bit of software |

I'm cool on software........just odd that I would get an email from someone whom I don't have any contact with or have their email address.

If I may just plug something... Norton Antivirus is an abysmal piece of crap. It's slow, doesn't detect many viruses, and I have personally had it trash 4 computers to the point where they wouldn't even boot. And why pay for virus protection when you can get it free from AVG I have no affiliation with these guys, I just think that anyone who tries to break the Norton / McAffee cartel needs support.

I have to agree with Norton being a piece of crap.
It might be a good virus detector, but in my case it has corrupted files and HD numerous times (until I found out it was Norton). Its actually done more damage to my systems than any virus. If you don't have a an internet server and don't have hundreds of emails a day, I find its pretty pointless to use any virus protection or firewall anyway. Just don't open any suspicious attachments from any email. |
