Will a H*mm*ngb*rd tail motor work in Fun Pic? I 'destroyed' my tail motor (long story) and am waiting for a replacement to arrive. I saw some H*mm*ngb*rd tail motors in at my LHS and they look identical except for a capacitor across the terminals. Can I use this motor in my Fun Pic? What is the capacitor for? Can I leave it or should I cut it out?
Thanks. |

The stock tail motor did not and it is a 'really' new pic kit.

Check if your LHS carries the GWS b2c.
I autopsied? the stock and the GWS. You'll note the difference in brushes. I've used the GWS for over 10 hours with a three Kokam cell pack before it died (using the PB+ as tail esc).- And it wasn't due to the brushes but because the motor screws had gone loose and the meshing got stiff. (thank god its the motor that died and not the PB+) Now I check every other flight that the motor screws are tight.

The Wes Tech replacement motors from HeliHobby are also of the brushed variety, like the GWS motors.
Do you use capacitors on that motor? If so, what size? |

I doubt the Wes tech are the GWS ones.
That's because Wes Tec advertises the GWS motors as GWS motors (so why would Helihobby advertise them as Wes Tec). The Wes Tecs are the Micro 4.5-0.5 or Micro 4.5-0.6. Check here http://www.wes-technik.de/English/Motors3.htm The GWS do have capicitors on. Could the humingbird motors be the GWS ones? Would be intersting to know. What about removing the endbell and letting us know? |

You are correct, that clearly looks like a superior motor. It is just that I had already ordered the 'stock' tail motor before seeing your post and the delivary was running days late. I wanted to get my Pic back into the air this weekend and was starting to get desperate. The LHS in my area stock h*mm*ngb*rd parts, not much Pic stuff and I could get the HB motor for about $13. Just so happens, my Pic tail motor showed up this afternoon so I am all set to go for now.

[ QUOTE ]
so is the gws motor better than the wes tek [/ QUOTE ] Reading the German forums the Wes Tec is considered the same (just cheaper and without pinion and wires as the stock Ikarus) What I know for sure on 3 cell Kokam pack: 1) GWS has more authority - i.e. I had a new stock Ikarus motor (the finger brushes) set the Gyro mixer till the tail stayed pretty much put. Removed it and replaced with a new GWS motor. Had to reduce the mixer. 2) In the first 50 or so seconds of a fully charged pack, the tail with the stock motor wags - the GWS does not (using the same gyro gain). Remember I use a PB+ without HH. I can't get the HH to funtion with either motors without continuous tail wagging (using a 3 cell pack). 3) Motor life. I'm not sure. Don't use the stock Ikarus motor anymore on 3 Kokams after I found out the above 2 points and reading some of the posts here I'd feel inclined to say GWS lasts longer. Best way would be to do some bench test on a couple of each motors and see if any significant difference arises. If any sponsors around ... 4) The disadvantage of the GWS is you need to add a pinion yourself - kind of tricky the first time (I messed up). |
