Default Loose ball-in-swash mod

Me thinks I should have used a file when opening up the hole for my new ball-in-swash mod - I used one drill and it was too small, and the next size up was too big!! End result? Floppy ball-in-swash device that won't even stay in with CA .... hehhhhhhhlp!!!

I tried CA and it worked for a coupl'a'flights but a hard landing made it pop out - I must say at this point that I didn't notice much difference with the ball-in-swash mod compared to stock .... I must be doing something wrong here!

Oh Nuts,

I ordered one, along with alu hub and CNC Antirotation Link late on Sat and was hoping the postie would bring improved flight characteristics in the morning.

If you have over drilled a bit, couldn't you 'pad it out' a bit with some hot glue ? You would need to be careful it was central.

I must say the thing that has made the most difference so-far for me is trimming the blades. My 1st set (the tuning blades) got the chop as I had dinked a chip out of one and thought, 'who cares they are gonnas anyway'. They were a great improvement (head speed inrease) with 10mm off the trailing edge at the root and about 2mm at the tip with nothing off the ends (length).

I noticed a crack near the root on Saturday so consigned them to the bin and took the block plane and stanley knife to my stock (original) ones (no weight at tip). This time I took some off the ends as well with roughly 8mm from the trailing edge at the root, 1mm at the tip and 10mm OFF the tip (length trim).

This added to the head stiffener made a serious difference.

I just put my plastic bearings on a temp new hub (I didn't think I'd get the steel bearings off the temp plastic hub without breaking it - and I'm waiting for the ali hub, so wanted to save the ball bearings for the new ali one).

I've just been brave/silly and gone outside in winds of about 6 to 10 MPH - gusting to about 15, though with some protection from hedge/fence.

It hovered nicely, I didn't risk FF or 180's but lifted it gingerly 'above the fence' to take the brunt of the wind.

Other than some lift, which I expected (hovering below 1/4 throttle LOL) it took it REALLY well with good cyclic response.

Out of the wind it hovers a bit over 1/2 throttle and I recon I need to gear it down a bit.. But I like the blades.

Could you try cutting your old (Original) blades? I wouldn't risk those lovely CF ones.

interesting story there jmuk - I may try cutting down the stock blades and observe the performance boost/drain - I'm still running the 295, and I've never heard of people getting great duration with that compared to the 310

the duration I'm getting is starting to become a real burden - I just want to keep flying! - not fuss around with those !@^!%& rubber bands to keep changing the batteries!

trade you a new (still in packet) swash for a spare tail rotor, if it helps?

Forget any other mods. Go Lithium

I'm running a 2s1p pack of the ET1200's on the Fun. Flying Weight 210g. I give up when the throttle timer says 25min, and very little of that is spooling up/down.

don't have any spare tail rotors I'm afraid ... I'll try again with CA giving it a really good key before gluing ....

to be fair to the ball-in-swash mod I was flying in continuous wind (around 5mph maybe? - I've no idea what different wind speeds feel like ) - I'll try it inside

Hogster

I had VERY bad luck with original batteries:
1st pack (NiCad) caught fire as it was removed from it's first charge !!
2nd, 3rd, 4th (Twicell Nihms) all gave NIGHTMARE flight times and eventually gave up taking a charge.

Moved to Liths and they seem quite good 15-20 mins (ave), not tested with new (stock) trimmed blades.

I got the 310 with the tuning blades in a kit with another darn twicell battery (which I must send back). I'm sure its' an improvement on the 295, but not a HUGE one.

Why not try ginerly trimming the old stock blades and see how you go.

Battery times are a real nightmare. I can remember (vividly) just how frustrating it was getting a couple of mins or, at worst, not enough power to even get off the ground on stock everything !!

I'm sorry to hear about your ball-in-swash as loads of people seemd to say 'If you only fit One Mod, this is it'..

BTW the offer of a swash for a tail rotor is a great deal. I've gone through a few tails, but I was looking at a swash tosay and I think they were about £17 quid

Hogster,

Wrap a strip of paper round the ball housing until it is large
enough to fill the hole that you now have in the swash, then
superglue it all together.

When I went to fit mine, I couldn't find a 5mm drill so I used
a 3/16" (4.76mm) drill and took the hole out with rolled up
emery paper (wet & dry)

mmm I am considering it more - what can I expect to pay for maybe a 2-cell pack and a good Lithium-only charger? Would 2-cell (7.2v) be OK for my setup at the moment? I'm running 8.4v with a 7-cell Ni-Mh pack - I gather 3-cells would be too much for the tail motor, so I'd need to go separates which I can't afford, and then from my point of view more problems seems to snowball from there - all these complications put me off going for them

Guys, with the AR link and ball in swash mod the difference is huge. The Heli responds instantly to changes of direction from your sticks.

I flew a work m8s stock fun piccolo straight from the box this afternoon and it felt like it had rubber servo arms installed in comparison

Hogster... I'm running twin cell li-polys and with a 8 tooth main pinion get a good 15mins flying time I would guess. Loadsa power and light weight.
