I have seen reference that if you go to a brushless motor, you should also invest in a "thrust bearing". Exactly, what is a thrust bearing and where does it go. I have to assume its for the main shaft. Do you need some type of holder for it? Thanks.

The thrust bearings go and replace the rotor blade spindle bearings (i think) and the kit includes everything you need for complete instalation.

Do a search, Q has written some nice details and posted a nice pisture in a post recently. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry for continuing this topic. I'm a relatively new ECO8 owner and have just received an H8 with a Phoenix 45. I am also thinking about getting some thrust bearings. I havn't been able to find the information I need easily doing a search though... Could someone post a reference to the thread? Btw. here is an additional question: Where can I get the thrust bearings (prefarably a european dealer)? Regards, KDO |

You don't need the thrust bearings if you stay below 1800 RPM!!!!
Not many of us use them. For the record (Dj, I hope you are reading this!) you DON'T replace a bearing, you ADD the thrust bearing to the head! If you really want them, the best way is to get them from a PMP (http://www.precisionmodelproducts.com) distributor. PMP is the only company making a thust bearing kit for the ECO8. They recently decided to sell noly though a reseller channel only so you'll have to order from some other company. Sly's Hobby Den (http://www.slyshobbyden.net) should have them. Here's the picture I posted in the other thread:

Ok, I hate the search function on this BBS. Besides I just lost it. I can't even find the search function!
So what is a thrust bearing? A thrust bearing is designed to take up thrust or pull load. The normal radial bearings you have on the rotor head is good for mostly up and down/side to side load of the blade grip. If you pull on the blade grip hard enough the inner race of the radial bearing will pull on the metal ball and eventually bind against the outer race. So you need a different type of bearing to take care of the thrust load. A thrust bearing consist of two races that are shaped like washers. A set of metal balls in a cage is sandwiched between the two washers. So when you pull on one washer it presses against the balls which in turn press against the other washer. PMP makes a thrust bearing up grade kit for the ECO 8. The kit will fit both the stock plastic head and the upgrade ali head. You retain the two radial bearings on the blade grip. The thrust bearing will require an additional space so PMP supply a special T-nut to fit at the ends of the feathering spindle. The thrust bearing PM provide has a 10 mm OD and the ID of the main rotor blade grip is 11 mm. So PMP provide a special spacer cup that increases the size of the thrust bearing inner race plus it spacer the inner race from the radial bearing to reduce friction. Here is the link to PMP's thrust bearing kit: http://gallery.bcentral.com/Gallery/...mp;sortOrder=0 Unfortunately they are not selling that from their site anymore. You will have to order from a dealer such as FXAeromodel. |

The search function sucks big time. I think they don't index the posts properly. I had to go through the list of my own posts to find the one I was looking for.
Here you go : http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/ubbth...?Number=345917 And here's a complete explanation on thusts I put on the Piccolo forum : http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/ubbth...mp;o=&vc=1 |

The search function works well you just need to figure out how to use it. Unlike most search engines, this one requires explicit boolean operators. Instead of searching for 'thrust bearing' search for '+thrust +bearing' (but not in quotes). |

Ok, I challenge you to find the post I linked to above using that.
Hint 1: I used "+thust +bearing" and "+thrust". Both with and without indicating my user as the poster. Hint 2: I build web sites professinally. Some of those use full text search functions. Hint 3: The search function of this board stinks big time |

Ok, I challenge you to find the post I linked to above using that. [/ QUOTE ] Okay. I searched for '+thrust +bearings' explicitly selecting the Eco8 forum and everything else default. The thread "Re: tail thrust bearings mod info" is on the first page. Your specific post is fourth from the bottom. Doing the same explicitly for the Piccolo forum returns the thread "Re: So....Is the cnc aluminum ccpm head a good mod?" with your post right at the top of the list. If you click on it you actually have to go back a page to get to it, which is a bit crap. But I would have read the entire thread anyway. I know it's not perfect but it's not exactly a lot of work! |
