Default gear ratios and lithium batteries..

hi,

i fly my FP pic with a 2 cell 1200mAh lipoly pack and a 310 ikarus motor with a standard 9t pinion and a 100t main gear. it weighs with the battery 250gr..

the problem is that it flys high for anout 2 minutes and then it just hovers about 20cm (10") of the ground. it seems to lose power quickly.
i am considering getting a 3cell 1200mAh lipoly pack but can the piccoboard handle 11,1v? or maybe changing the gear ratio so that i can fly again with power.

what does a 10t pinion change? more headspeed? more power?

greets

nico

I fly for 20 minutes on exactly the set-up you have, something has to be wrong. Either the battery is on it's way out, or it's not getting fully charged, or the main motor/tail motor is pulling more current than it should.
Check for "tightness" in the mechanics....check that the flybar paddles are exactly in line with each other....check the battery connector is good.

Just thought...is the 100 tooth main gear the standard one ???

Check the old classic, the slipping pinion

have you check the blades and make sure that they are on track? An off-tracked blades will not only cause efficiency to go down but also cause the lift to decrease.

We many times forget that the motor could be dirty inside. How many hours have you flight with it(aprox)? Do you fly outdoors, in dusty conditions?
Before anything else, I would: a) put the motor in WD40 for 30-40 seconds working with 2 cells or normal AA batteries (do you know how to do it?)
b) ensure the pinion is not sliping, put a tiniest drop of Ca between the shaft and the pinion. Good luck, Nico

i'll check the blades again.. the paddles seem to slightly point downward after a moment of flight.. they come loose every time. but i am waiting for better flybar links from CNC Model Parts

i don't think the pinion is slipping because it is really tucked on tight, because i coukdn't get it off with all my strength..

the main gear is an one-way upgrade from Hubi which is excellent..

i'll let you know.

Hi, your motor is knackersd! I have had many 310's some last forever, and some last for a few minutes! forget cleaning them, throw them in the bin, and get yourself an astro 010, brushless, and a phoenix 10! you'll never look back! my pic now flies for about 20 minutes, average, with each charge of my 1500 2 cell kokam's, with no loss of power whatsoever! supacontroller

thanks for the advice, i came to the conclusion myself that it must be the motor, i have been flying it for almost 2 months now with about 5-10 flights a day.. well i just graduated from college and lets just say it was raining a lot and i had lots of time!.. it probably is the engine which is abou to die on me..

i'd love to get an brushless for this one, but i have to wait before my first paycheck comes in, because te funds are getting dry.. maybe someone of you guys has a second hand lying around.. and how dou you hook an extra speed controller up to the piccoboard?

for the time now i will probably get a spare g-310 or another good low budget performance motor.. any ideas?

greets..

nico,

seems like a few things happening here. could be a combination of using different gearing, G310 clog up over time, slight cell deteriation on a 250g heli.

check the motor stiffness, it may be the axel bearing is clogged up with carbon particles which will drag down efficiency giving the cells a hard time. remove with WD40 to free up the bearing.

what was the gearing before you added 'one-way upgrade' 10T on 96T main gear?
96T/10T= 9.6:1 ratio

100T/9T= 11.1:1 ratio
100T/10T = 10:1 ratio
100T/11T = 9:1 ratio
if the cells are ok then i reckon a 10T or 11T pinion would get u back in action.
