hey guys...i did something kinda..well...just plain stupid last night. going to tell everyone about hoping to drive home the point that these little heli's can be dangerous little devils....especially during a "momentary lack of concentration"
had the beast sitting on the couch. i was adjusting the pitch curves. im still getting the hang of my new jr8103. i was trying to set the pitch curves so that i have the required +6 degrees at midstick. i set the throttle hold on so i could take pitch measurements. but something wasnt working. no matter how much i altered the pitch curve, the actualy pitch of the blades was still apearing to be linear when i moved the stick.....oh....i seee, i thought to myself....the pitch curve i was ssetting was for "norm" mode, not for hold mode....ok...so i lean in to read the pitch gauge and flip the hold switch to get into norm mode and...whack!...right in the forhead..... now i have a 1/4" gash above my right eye....stupid mistake....but it could have been worse.... Yeeouch!! Yea, most of us have been bittin by our ECO's from having momentary "brain farts". Now, here's the trick to setting the curve safely. Just pull one brush from your motor.. all you have to do is release the small spring that holds pressure on it against the com and then slide it out of the hood. The motor won't start then, and you can do your setup with the tx in norm. BTW, check your spindle shaft again now... if it's not the hardened one you probably bent it when the blade whacked you. Keep it safe!!!

eek - nasty. Very glad is wasn't a bit lower! I do all my setup on my eco 8 using a standard receiver pack plugged directly into the receiver and do not connect the main pack up to the esc - that way I know no matter what, it will never do that to me.... again!!! I had an incident a long while back very similar, only it was the heli swinging in my hand that knocked the switch - a painful and expensive experience, but one that certainly taught me respect very quickly.

That's why an electric helicopter is so much more dangerous than a glow fueled heli. Most people ignore the fact that electric motor may be just as powerful if not more than a glow fuel motor.
Anytime you do any adjusting on the electronics of an electric helicopter always use a separate 4 cell battery pack to power the receiver. You are lucky this time. Next time you may not be writing to us from home. Instead of cracking your forehead the blade could have rupture one of your eye balls. |
